Traffic event detection framework using social media

The accepted version of the publication may differ from the final published version.© 2017 IEEE. Traffic incidents are one of the leading causes of non-recurrent traffic congestions. By detecting these incidents on time, traffic management agencies can activate strategies to ease congestion and travelers can plan their trip by taking into consideration these factors. In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in Twitter because of the real-time nature of its data. Twitter has been used as a way of predicting revenues, accidents, natural disasters, and traffic. This paper proposes a framework for the real-time detection of traffic events using Twitter data. The methodology consists of a text classification algorithm to identify traffic related tweets. These traffic messages are then geolocated and further classified into positive, negative, or neutral class using sentiment analysis. In addition, stress and relaxation strength detection is performed, with the purpose of further analyzing user emotions within the tweet. Future work will be carried out to implement the proposed framework in the West Midlands area, United Kingdom.Published versio
Mean field limit for bosons and propagation of Wigner measures
We consider the N-body Schr\"{o}dinger dynamics of bosons in the mean field
limit with a bounded pair-interaction potential. According to the previous work
\cite{AmNi}, the mean field limit is translated into a semiclassical problem
with a small parameter , after introducing an
-dependent bosonic quantization. The limit is expressed as a
push-forward by a nonlinear flow (e.g. Hartree) of the associated Wigner
measures. These object and their basic properties were introduced in
\cite{AmNi} in the infinite dimensional setting. The additional result
presented here states that the transport by the nonlinear flow holds for rather
general class of quantum states in their mean field limit.Comment: 10 page
Enhancement of near-cloaking. Part II: the Helmholtz equation
The aim of this paper is to extend the method of improving cloaking
structures in the conductivity to scattering problems. We construct very
effective near-cloaking structures for the scattering problem at a fixed
frequency. These new structures are, before using the transformation optics,
layered structures and are designed so that their first scattering coefficients
vanish. Inside the cloaking region, any target has near-zero scattering cross
section for a band of frequencies. We analytically show that our new
construction significantly enhances the cloaking effect for the Helmholtz

Herpes Simplex Virus-Associated Aplastic Anemia
Aplastic anemia is an uncommon condition defined by peripheral pancytopenia in the context of hypocellular bone marrow. In the majority of cases, it is idiopathic in origin. However, exposure to certain drugs and toxins, autoimmune processes, and viral infections have been linked to this entity. This is the case of a 56-year-old female with an acute presentation of fever, odynophagia, and dysphagia. Physical examination revealed multiple hemorrhagic ulcers affecting her oropharyngeal mucosa with regions of necrosis. Mucosal biopsy was compatible with the presence of local necrosis and keratinization. Hematological analysis showed severe peripheral pancytopenia, and the bone marrow biopsy revealed a hypocellular marrow, findings consistent with aplastic anemia. An ample PCR viral panel revealed the presence of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1). The patient was placed on systemic antiviral therapy, followed by a rapid improvement of the mucositis as well as the peripheral and central pancytopenia. Our case indicated the possible association of HSV-1 infection and the development of aplastic anemia, an important and not yet recognized association considering the rapid improvement of the clinical picture once the underlying etiology was addressed
On the spectrum of a waveguide with periodic cracks

Biochemical effects of low-dose whole body x-irradiation on mouse liver and the protective action of ectoine
Purpose: To investigate the possible role of ectoine, which is known to protect protein hydration and folding and structural organization of biological membranes, in protecting mouse liver against low-dose x-irradiation.Methods: The study included thirty Swiss albino mice weighing 20 - 22 g each, which were divided into five groups of six animals each: group (1) naïve animals serving as control, group (2) animals irradiated with a whole-body 2 Gy single dose of x-ray, and sacrificed after one day, group (3) x-irradiated and sacrificed after one week (each animal in the 3 groups received 0.2 mL saline daily by oral gavage). Group 4 consisted of x-irradiated animals dosed with ectoine 200 mg/kg in saline and sacrificed after one day. Group 5 cmoprised of x-irradiated animals and were dosed daily with ectoine 200 mg/kg and sacrificed after one week. The evaluated inflammation parameters in the animals’ liver were interleukin- 1β (IL-1β), interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-10 (IL-10) and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2). Furthermore, the oxidative stress parameters, viz, malondialdehyde (MDA), reduced glutathione (GSH), oxidized glutathione (GSSG) and their ratio (GSH/GSSG) were also assessed.Results: Whole body low-dose x-irradiation resulted in statistically significant (p ≤ 0.05) increases in all ILs tested as well as PGE2 of mice liver. Indications of oxidative stress included elevated levels of MDA and oxidized glutathione with decreased reduced glutathione. The effects of radiation were progressive and the changes in the tested parameters increased from day 1 to day 7. Administration of ectoine significantly (p ≤ 0.05) ameliorated the biochemical effects induced by whole body x-irradiation. Furthermore, the modulating action was dependent on the accumulation of ectoine, as it was more effective after repeated administration.Conclusion: Ectoine has a post-irradiation protective effect on mouse liver via its action on inflammatory and oxidative stress pathways. It probably has similar action in other vital organs. Preventive treatment of healthcare personnel and technicians frequently exposed to low doses of radiation with ectoine is worth investigating.Keywords: X-irradiation, Ectoine, Oxidative stress, Mice, Radioprotectio
The essential spectrum of the Neumann–Poincaré operator on a domain with corners
Exploiting the homogeneous structure of a wedge in the complex plane, we compute the spectrum of the anti-linear Ahlfors-Beurling transform acting on the associated Bergman space. Consequently, the similarity equivalence between the Ahlfors--Beurling transform and the Neumann-Poincare operator provides the spectrum of the latter integral operator on a wedge. A localization technique and conformal mapping lead to the first complete description of the essential spectrum of the Neumann-Poincare operator on a planar domain with corners, with respect to the energy norm of the associated harmonic field
Imaging criteria for assessing tumour response: RECIST, mRECIST, Cheson
AbstractMost methods define a limited number of “target” lesions to be measured and other “non-target” lesions to be evaluated qualitatively. RECIST criteria are the most widely used although other criteria have been proposed that are derived from them based on size alone, or size and attenuation. Modified RECIST (mRECIST) criteria only concern hepatocellular carcinoma and only take into account the viable portion (enhanced after injection during the arterial phase). Cheson criteria are more complex as target lesions are defined differently depending on the organ (lymph nodes, liver or spleen, other organs), and involve both CT and PET scans, as well as the clinical examination and bone marrow biopsy
